Lexical and semantic development of the basic vocabulary in English and Slovak

Abstract:

The paper deals with the development of the form and meaning of Slovak and English basic vocabulary, and, where appropriate, takes into account also several other relevant European languages. As the basic set of words for research the Swadesh list of 100 words was used, building on the notion that it contains the words and meanings that are the most resistant to changes (Trask, Millar; 2007: 459-460).
