British commerce and Spanish government in New Granada in the early 18th century, from the asiento to the War of Jenkins' Ear

Abstract:

This dissertation presents a case study of the economic confrontation that eventually led to the War of Jenkins’ Ear between England and Spain in the early 18th century. It discussed the commercial competition taking place in New Granada in the years leading to the conflict, as exemplified by the experience of the South Sea Company factory in the port city of Cartagena, its efforts to penetrate the colonial market, and Spain’s response to this challenge.
