South African maths teachers’ perceptions about estimation, practice, and praxis

Abstract:

This research project explores how the often-under-taught mathematical skill of estimation can be a useful tool in helping young South Africans grow into ‘future leaders’. The paper argues that in a socio-economic landscape which is defined by inequality and under-education, the skill of estimation, when taught well, has the potential to greatly benefit the lives of young and old.
