The complexity of lead character Marco Zuloaga’s role in Hable con ella has been underestimated in existing studies of Almodóvar’s film, more enthralled by the sexually ambiguous figure of Benigno and his insemination-through-rape of Alicia. This article stresses Marco’s importance as moral touchstone and aesthetic yardstick of the film and comments on his surprisingly conventional persona in its gender design.
